To the Editor,
I would like to take exception to J.G.’s view, expressed online in July, of Mr Barnier and the way he negotiated for the EU.
J.G. is obviously a believer in UK exceptionalism. Mr Barnier simply treated the UK exactly as he would have treated any other EU state.
The UK is not different and J.G. would be well served by understanding this.
Whatever David Cameron had come away with from Brussels, Brexit would have happened.
The UK electorate were badly served by con men on the Leave campaign with their own interests at heart rather than those of the British people.
The recent events surrounding Nigel Farage have proved this point beyond any doubt.
The EU has become stronger as a result of the UK’s exit and the UK has become poorer.
Thank you Farage, Johnson and Gove.

I totally agree with your reader's letter, posted online in July, in defence of Mr Barnier.
I read Mr Barnier's book and I approached it with a preconception about his arrogance because he does appear rather self-satisfied.
However, this soon dissipated as he set out calmly, clearly and factually all of his arguments and demonstrated, time after time, the ignorance, nonchalance and, yes, arrogance of the UK negotiators.
The comparison of the sheer stupidity of the UK's withdrawal arguments with the way in which senior civil servants from the UK went to Brussels after the country joined the then Common Market and reorganised the Commission is staggering.
The UK was done a great disservice under successive prime ministers and their sycophantic minions, leading to a catastrophic Brexit decision and resulting negotiations.
