Why would we want to rejoin the European Union?

Reader rejects Andy Burnham’s “hint” to return to the EU

British and European Union flags flying outside the Palace of Westminster in London
The relationship between the two entities is complex

To the Editor,

I was horrified by UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham's very large “hint” that he would be prepared to lead the UK back into the chaos of the EU. Apart from the fact that referenda are usually a generation thing, he has no mandate now and pre-supposes he will be in post at the next election, never mind if Labour are re-elected!

I agree we have not benefitted anything like as much as we should have done, largely because the political class were almost universally against leaving and, therefore, did not treat the exit terms with any degree of respect for the vote.

Hence, we have a situation where some people who voted leave are now persuaded it was the wrong decision, simply because the politicians did not do their job in negotiating the best deal but erred on the side of their own prejudices. Added to the vindictive way the EU as a whole, and France in particular, did everything they could to trash the decision to leave by being totally obstructive in our dealings with them and to indicate to others who were thinking of leaving what to expect if they had the temerity to follow our example.
