Is President Macron the problem with France?

To the Editor,
I read with interest Nick Inman’s recent articles about President Macron. As a retired American fleeing the chaos of the US dictatorship, I must speak in support of France’s democratic system and President Macron’s leadership.
Macron may have his faults, but he is fair, just and respects and upholds the French constitution. He has reduced unemployment, and is a staunch advocate for domestic and global environmental protection, renewable energy, gender equality, and reproductive rights.
He is an exceptional diplomatic leader on international forums on climate change, security, and multilateralism. Those who criticise and disagree with Macron should produce a better candidate. So far, they have not.
To remove him before his term ends would create havoc and instability.

To the Editor,
Creating a precedent by using a constitutional shortcut can be very dangerous – just look at what is happening in the US where laws and the constitution seem to have become disposable.
Badmouthing political opponents has also become the order of the day.
Government works best when opposing parties, whatever their differences, can also work together. We should be guarding our democracy; it was hard won, and up until now I have not seen anything that is an improvement on it.

To the Editor,
The major problem in France is the election system. How can countless candidates stand in the first round but only the top two make the final? Surely that gives at least a third of voters no-one to vote for.
At least for the moment the French have realised that nationalism is not the answer. However, in 18 months’ time that may change and not for the better.
