Château de Bazoches (near Anus) in Bergundy

To the Editor,

Your article ‘Bonjour, je viens de Mars – fun French town names’ (Connexion, October) resonates with me as Anus is just up the road from where I live in Yonne.

We also have a Misery close by.

In fact, I have often thought that an enticing itinerary for the potty-minded Anglo-Saxon visitor to our picturesque but overlooked corner of France might be Jussy, Merry-sur-Yonne, Anus, Chitry and Misery.

Unfortunately there are no accessible road signs left to Anus; they have been so often souvenired, the authorities decided not to replace them.

There is, however, a plentiful supply of good local wine, if not an abundance of public loos, and hardly a tripper leaves who is not enchanted by Vézelay, the Grottes d’Arcy and the Château de Bazoches.

R.M., Yonne

To the Editor,

I am still trying to sort out La Souterraine (Creuse) as the town is demonstrably above ground.
