Does home insurance cover Asian hornet nest removal?

What to know before calling a pest-control specialist

Insurers can approach the issue very differently or not at all

Reader question: If my mairie doesn’t cover the cost of an Asian hornet nest removal, does my home insurance cover it? Which insurers in France offer this type of protection?

If you discover an Asian hornet nest in your garden in autumn and your mairie does not cover its removal or part of it, your home insurance won’t necessarily do it either.

Autumn is also a time when previously hidden Asian hornet nests can become easier to spot, as strong winds and falling leaves expose nests built high in trees during the summer.

If you discover one, it is best not to approach or disturb it. Professional pest controllers are recommended for nest removal, and costs can vary depending on the size, location and accessibility of the nest.

Most home insurance policies do not automatically cover the cost of removing a wasp or hornet nest. However, some insurers do offer this protection, either as part of their home insurance or through a specific assistance package.

The conditions, limits and situations though can be different depending on the insurer.

Here are three examples of insurers that currently offer some form of cover for hornet nest removal.

Crédit Mutuel: up to €150 per year

In April 2026, Crédit Mutuel announced that it would include a flat-rate payment for the removal of Asian hornet nests in its participating home insurance contracts for individuals, including contracts for non-occupying owners.

The cover applies to both inside and outside the home, including areas such as a garden or terrace. It applies to existing and new eligible contracts, without an additional premium.

The insurer will cover up to €150 per calendar year, provided the customer submits an invoice for the removal of a nest located in the home or on the insured property.

Luko by Allianz Direct: up to €300

Luko by Allianz Direct also offers cover for hornet nests, but under its Couverture Étendue and pest assistance.

Its assistance lists Asian and European hornet nests, as well as wasp and bee nests, among the pests covered.

The insurer arranges the intervention with a specialist and covers the cost up to €300, with one intervention per year and no advance payment from the customer.

Luko, however, specifies that its coverage applies only to infestations that occur after the Couverture Étendue has started. In other words, a pre-existing infestation is not covered.  and that the guarantee covers the treatment itself rather than damage caused by the infestation.

Macif: up to €300, but more specific conditions

Macif also provides assistance for hornets through its assistance nuisibles service.

Under its home insurance conditions, when the inside of the insured building is infested by various pests, including Asian or European hornets, Macif Assistance can arrange a diagnosis and professional treatment.

This coverage includes again a maximum of one intervention per insurance year but it does not simply cover a nest anywhere (garden, shed etc) but only inside the insured building.

These examples show that insurers can approach the issue very differently or not at all. So, if you have found an Asian hornet nest in your home, you should check your home insurance policy or contact your insurer before paying for its removal.

Finally, it is important to remember that removing a hornet nest can be dangerous, and it is best to leave the treatment to a suitably equipped professional rather than attempting to remove the nest yourself.
