A French woman was denied boarding after her passport, previously reported as stolen, was wrongly returned to her following a carjacking.
The woman, from Sausheim in the Haut-Rhin department (Grand Est), was the victim of a violent carjacking in Mulhouse in August 2025. According to L’Alsace, two men stole her car along with computer equipment and personal documents.
Two days later, the suspects were arrested and police contacted the woman so she could recover her belongings, including her passport.
However, eight months later, at Zurich Airport, she was stopped at boarding when her passport triggered an alert in the border control system. Although the document had been physically returned, it was still recorded as stolen in official databases and therefore considered invalid.
Despite last-minute attempts to resolve the issue with the prefecture, no solution was found. As India does not accept emergency or temporary travel documents for tourist stays, she was unable to board her flight, while her partner boarded the plane alone.
The case highlights a gap in procedure, as while the passport remained flagged as stolen in official systems, it was still physically returned to its owner.
What to do if your passport is lost or stolen
If your passport is lost or stolen while in France, it must be reported immediately to the police (or gendarmerie). This report automatically marks the document as invalid in official databases, even if it is later recovered.
You should then apply for a replacement passport without delay via your local prefecture in France, or through your embassy or consulate if you are a foreign national.
