Map: Auchan plan to sell 91 supermarkets across France

Supermarket brand Auchan has confirmed that it plans to sell 91 sites (offering firstly to the Mousquetaires group which runs Intermarché and Netto), rather than simply rebranding them.

The group had previously announced in November 2025 that its 261 supermarkets and franchised stores would gradually move over to the Intermarché or Netto branding, but would remain under the same ownership.

Now, this arrangement will only apply to 164 sites by April 2027, the group confirmed in a press release on January 27. 

The group stated: “Auchan Retail France will continue to operate 164 supermarkets within a dedicated autonomous entity operated under franchise agreement under the Intermarché and Netto brands.”

In contrast, most other sites will now be offered for sale, based on their "geographic or economic situation”, it said.

Auchan will retain 11 sites, mainly in the Paris region “whose specific characteristics in terms of surface area, location and potential justify it”. These will be run “under other formats”, it said, without specifying further details.

Auchan had previously said that there would be no job losses as part of the transfer away from the brand, but it is not yet clear whether this is the case for the new arrangement. 

The sales will go ahead subject to “consultation with employee representative bodies and prior authorisation from the competition authority l’Autorité de la Concurrence”, Auchan added.

The Les Mousquetaires Group has bought several struggling supermarkets in recent years, including some 250 Casino stores and 81 from Colruyt. Its CEO Thierry Cotillard has previously said it is aiming for a 20% market share by 2028. This would allow it to compete with Carrefour, which has 21%.
