People in France are giving more to charity this year than they did last year (2024 vs 2023), a new study shows, with the average person donating more than €200 per year to charitable causes.

Each person is donating on average €15 more in 2024 than they did in 2023, for a yearly total average of €206 (around €17 per month), found a new Odoxa survey*.

This includes donations to associations, foundations, projects or directly to people in difficulty.

Who gives the most?

The highest donations in 2024 have so far come from:

  • Those living in the Paris region (€269 per year)

  • Retired people (€264)

  • Executives (€247)

Generosity rising?

One in five (20%) survey respondents said they had made donations of over €300 in the last 12 months, compared with 11% in 2023.

Those who gave more this year said it was because:

  • They had more to give (55%)

  • More causes affected them (79%).

Which were the most popular charitable causes?

Of the causes donated to, the most popular were:

  • Medical research and the fight against disease (39%)

  • Animal protection (29%)

  • Child protection (28%)

  • Aid for the sick or disabled (26%)

  • The fight against poverty in France (24%)

The Grand Est region is the only area where medical research is not the top cause; animal protection is the most common there.

Which regions have given the most and the least?

Donations were higher than the national average in:

  • Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (€221)

  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine (€216).

Donations were lowest in:

  • Normandy (€152)

  • Grand Est (€144).

The number of donations

Overall, when it comes to the number of donations in the past 12 months:

  • 60% of people said they made the same number of donations as the year before

  • 10% said they made more donations

  • 30% said they made fewer donations.

The majority of those who said they made fewer donations said that they could not afford to give as much as in previous years.

Three in five people (61%) said that they had doubts about how their donations would be used. This was a growing worry against the context of increasing numbers of scams, they said.

Future giving plans?

In years to come:

  • 64% said they would be more likely to give to people in difficulty close to them

  • 50% said they would prefer to donate to local associations rather than large ones

  • 10% said they would favour donations to political parties in the future.
