Today’s French public sector strikes: where and when are demonstrations taking place
More than 150 marches to be held across France by unions
France is bracing for disruption today as a public sector strike takes place across the country.
A high turnout is expected by the inter-union group organising the strike, affecting schooling, hospital care, fire stations, and public services, alongside some flight reductions at airports including in Paris and Marseille.
Teaching union Snuipp-FSU said around 40% of primary school teachers will walk out, leading some schools to close for the day (minimum service rules mean primary school pupils will still be supervised during school hours).
However, disruption to train services should be minimal, with only local TER trains set to see cancellations or delays in relation to the strike.
Striking workers have been urged by the inter-union group leading the strikes to join marches and demonstrations across the country.
More than 150 demonstrations and marches are set to take place, including in every major city.
Turnout figures will not be known until the end of the day, but the last major public sector strikes in December 2024 saw between 130,000 (interior ministry estimate) and 200,000 (CGT union estimate) attend nationwide.
Many of the marches start between 10:30 and 14:00, although some such as the demonstration in Nice will begin earlier.
