Over-65s in France can benefit from a new scheme at thousands of local Carrefour stores that extends the system of free delivery and provides easier-to-find products and extra help.
The programme, called “Carrefour des générations”, launched on May 18 in Carrefour Express, Carrefour City, Carrefour Contact and Carrefour Montagne stores nationwide.
The retailer says the changes are designed to adapt shops and services to France’s ageing population, with over-60s expected to represent more than a third of the population by 2060.
Which Carrefour stores are included?
The scheme only applies to Carrefour’s smaller convenience stores, not larger supermarkets or hypermarkets.
Over-65s shopping in Carrefour Express, City, Contact and Montagne stores will see:
free home delivery from €50 of shopping
dedicated shelf labels for products aimed at seniors
more small-portion products for one or two-person households
extra staff assistance in-store
help signing up for Carrefour loyalty cards
additional local services including newspaper sales and some La Poste counters
Carrefour staff are also receiving training on helping senior customers, including explaining products, assisting with shopping and handling special orders.
The new free-delivery threshold may be one of the most immediately useful changes for shoppers. Carrefour previously offered free delivery to over-65s from €60 of purchases. This has now been reduced to €50 under the new programme.
Products adapted for over-65s
Carrefour said stores taking part in the scheme will give greater visibility to products aimed at the nutritional needs and shopping habits of over-65s, including smaller portion sizes and functional foods.
Among the new products being promoted is a Carrefour-branded yoghurt combining skyr and bifidus cultures, marketed as a high-protein product intended to aid digestion.
The four-pack is priced at €1.89, around 20 centimes more than Carrefour’s standard skyr yoghurt range.
Carrefour also plans to organise activities in participating stores including coffee mornings, tasting workshops and games, which it said are intended to strengthen social links and encourage interaction between the generations.
The retailer added that the initiative was developed with input from loyal senior customers and around 20 pilot stores already working closely with over-65s.
