Where can I throw away old x-rays in France?
The scan images are kept for two decades by hospitals and have several uses
Reader question: I am clearing out my old paperwork and have some old x-rays to get rid of. I assume I cannot throw them in the bin, but what should I do with them?
You are correct that x-rays should not be thrown in standard waste bins in France – and you should not burn them.
Although x-rays are no longer classified as hazardous waste, they may still contain traces of certain metals or chemicals that can cause pollution.
Local sorting rules do not allow using household bins for this waste.
Your easiest option for disposing of old x-rays is likely to be local pharmacies.
Pharmacies are usually set up to accept medical waste and similar to old and expired medication, they accept x-rays. They sometimes conduct collection campaigns in the local area.
You do not need to make an appointment – just go to the pharmacy and ask them to take them from you.
Failing that, you may be able to drop x-rays off at hospitals or radiology clinics.
These will also have the means to dispose of medical waste, but will not always accept personal x-rays – check in advance by calling if you have to travel far.
Finally, some tips (déchèteries) that accept metal or plastic waste will also take x-rays, as well as certain mairies.
This is not guaranteed however, so check in advance.
Certain charities have also run campaigns to recycle old x-rays, including la Ligue contre le cancer and l’Ordre de Malte France.
X-rays can be kept for several years at home, either to compare against newer x-rays you receive to assess the progress of your healing or treatment path, or to help new doctors understand your condition better.
Beyond their medical use, x-rays can also be used as evidence in certain cases, for example, in insurance claims, a legal dispute involving a car accident, etc.
They are kept for between 20-28 years by hospitals.
You can therefore keep your x-rays at home for a long time if you wish, but ensure you keep them in their original envelope to avoid damage.
