What does avoir piscine mean?

It literally translates as ‘to have swimming’, or ‘to be going to the swimming pool.’

This is commonly said by French speakers as a cheeky way of implying that they will be absent from an activity, without giving a real excuse.

It can suggest that a person does not actually have anything else on, but just does not want to attend.

Sometimes, people replace piscine with pêche (fishing), or poney (horseriding).

The expression, in its most known and longer version, is: J'peux pas, j'ai piscine (I can’t, I’ve got swimming). Note that the negative ne is often not pronounced in casual spoken French.

English speakers sometimes use the excuse: I need to wash my hair.

What are the origins of avoir piscine?

The saying grew in popularity during the early 2000s.

It is a humoristic phrase that stems from the idea of swimming being a leisure activity that can usually be easily missed or moved to a different day or time.

When do you say avoir piscine?

It is often said as a standalone response when someone suggests doing something or going somewhere:

  • Question: Ma mère organise une fête samedi soir, ça te dit de venir ? (My mum is hosting a party this Saturday night if you want to come?

  • Response: Euh… j’ai piscine. (Ehh maybe another time).

To whom do you say avoir piscine?

It is considered informal language that can be used with friends and close family members.

Some people will not appreciate hearing this non-excuse as it is usually more polite to explain why you are unable to attend a particular event.

A more neutral alternative would be: Je m'excuse, mais je ne suis pas disponible (I am sorry, but I am not available).
