The streaming service Netflix is set to increase prices for millions of subscribers worldwide despite recording a record jump in sales and subscriber numbers.
Netflix announced earlier this week that they have crossed the 300 million subscriber threshold, with quarterly sales rising 16% to €9.8 billion.
Despite this, subscription rates in a number of countries will increase by $1 or $2 (US dollars) or the equivalent in local currencies.
New monthly rates will be: $7.99 for Netflix with ads (previously $6.99), $17.99 for the ‘Standard’ package (formerly $15.49), and $24.99 for Netflix Premium, up from $22.99.
The price increases will take place from next month in the United States, Canada, Portugal and Argentina.
“As we continue to invest in programming and deliver more value to our members, we will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can reinvest to continue to improve Netflix,” said the company in a letter to investors quoted in French media.
Price rises to come to France?
Subscribers based in France will therefore avoid a price increase in the first quarter of the year.
However, they are likely to see rates go up at the end of the year or in early 2026 as Netflix follows a fairly solid pattern of increasing its prices.
The last increase for subscribers in France came in October 2024, when the ‘Premium’ subscription was increased from €17.99 to €19.99 per month.
The two other packages – ‘Standard with adverts for €5.99 a month, and ‘Standard’ without adverts for €13.49 per month, were last changed in October 2023.
Netflix is looking to expand the selection of services on offer and has streaming rights for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, set to be hosted in Brazil in 2027.
