French grants for home renovations are changing

Act now if you want to fit a wood stove before the MaPrimeRénov grants are reduced in 2025

Published Modified

The grants available to renovate homes under France’s MaPrimeRénov system are to be reduced for higher income households in 2025 along with the help to purchase a wood stove.

The outgoing government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier issued a decree on December 5 altering several aspects of the grants from December 31 but maintaining and extending others.

MaPrimeRénov is a government programme that includes grants for home renovations and certain forms of financial aid.

The amount of help available depends on the type of work carried out, your status (homeowner, tenant or landlord) and your income.

Note that these changes will not affect you if you have already submitted an application for a MaPrimeRénov grant via the official website.

The changes to MaPrimeRénov concern new applications after January 1, 2025.

Income thresholds caps for MaPrimeRénov grants in 2025

Access to MaPrimeRénov grants is determined by household income, with the grant threshold caps adjusted each year.

These threshold caps determine how much of the remaining cost the applicant must pay for themselves.

While in theory households with a very low income can have 100% of the renovation work paid by MaPrimeRénov, in practice this is not always possible.

Simplified ‘single-step’ renovations maintained

There are essentially two types of MaPrimeRénov grants: Parcours accompagné (accompanied by an advisor) or parcours par gestes (single-step).

The single-step process was simplified in 2024, removing the need for applicants to provide a diagnostic de performance énergétique (energy efficiency evaluation or DPE) with their application.

It also removed the requirement for single-step renovations to upgrade their heating or water-heating systems.

These simplifications are maintained in 2025.

However, the grants available for major renovations accompanied by an advisory will be reduced for wealthier households.

The rate of assistance will fall from :

  • from 30% to 10% of the value of the work, excluding taxes, for projects that improve a home’s energy efficiency by two DPE categories,

  • from 35% to 15% of the amount before tax for projects that improve a home’s energy efficiency by three DPE categories,

  • from 35% to 20% of the amount before tax for projects that improve a home’s energy efficiency by three DPE categories.

The amount of the grant that can be paid in advance to low income households for work accompanied by an advisor is also to be reduced from 70% to 50% in 2025.

These changes apply to MaPrimeRénov applications submitted from January 1, 2025.

If you submitted your application before this date, you will still benefit from the 2024 grants.
